Each month volunteers from the cosmetic industry visit various homeless shelters throughout New York City to teach women how to apply makeup, do their nails and fix their hair. I’m intrigued by the fact that, with so many other, obviously far more immediate needs to be met in these women’s lives, the workshops draw attention to the most overlooked detail of all – their appearance. Exactly how important is it for women to measure up to the standards of beauty and outward acceptability that exist in our society?
